<p><span>In 2019, Amazon had to <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2019/07/22/amazon-warns-consumers-some-align-probiotic-supplements-sold-were-fake/1793750001/">warn</a> many shoppers that the Align Probiotic supplements they purchased on the site were likely counterfeit, while in 2017 many sellers were <a href="https://www.mic.com/articles/175691/amazon-vendors-are-selling-expired-emergency-contraception">caught</a> removing best-by dates from expired over-the-counter medicines.</span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>Quality control in the world of CBD is especially important because mislabeled ingredients can change a product’s efficacy, its immediate and long-term effects, its legal status and its safety for consumers. Poorly manufactured CBD products can contain contaminants such as lead and pesticides. </span></p>
<p><span>A 2017 study of 84 CBD products <a href="https://www.pennmedicine.org/news/news-releases/2017/november/penn-study-shows-nearly-70-percent-of-cannabidiol-extracts-sold-online-are-mislabeled">found</a> that a significant portion contained more CBD or less CBD than advertised, and even undisclosed and intoxicating levels of THC. CBD products that contain more than the 0.3% THC content allowed by the 2018 Farm Bill are considered controlled substances, and their manufacturers and distributors risk law-enforcement consequences. </span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>Mislabeled products and unproven health claims have gotten CBD manufacturers embroiled in class-action lawsuits, FDA warning letters and even government raids.</span><span> </span></p>
<p><span>CBD manufacturing is a diverse and largely unregulated field, which means quality can vary enormously among the hundreds of small companies jockeying for sales dollars. <p><span>With over $10 billion in annual net income from their existing operations, Amazon may have decided that entering this legally and medically complicated industry is simply more trouble than it’s worth.</span></p>
<p><span>Amazon has banned products containing CBD -- but that doesn’t mean you can’t obtain them shopping there. A Washington Post investigation <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2019/12/19/amazon-prohibits-cbd-sales-its-still-easy-buy-site/">found</a> that 11 out of 13 products bought on the site contained CBD. Some of those products came from CBD manufacturers that simply redesigned their Amazon-focused packaging to heavily imply, rather than flatly state, that CBD was in the product. </span></p>
<p><span>It’s technically a loophole, but it’s one that creates an even bigger regulation vacuum than simply allowing CBD sales, leaving Amazon shoppers vulnerable to counterfeiters, unclear dosages, mislabeled products and other quality and safety issues.</span><span> </span></p>

<strong><span>“Hemp-Seed Oil” and CBD Are Related, but They’re Not the Same</span></strong><span> </span>

<p><em>Cannabis sativa</em> grows up to thirteen feet high. It’s a flowering plant that has been used for centuries in medicinal and food supplemental applications. <em>Cannabis sativa</em> is typically high in THC, so it’s a common source of marijuana.<strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong><em>Cannabis ruderalis</em></strong> is grown in areas like China, Poland and Russia. It does well in harsh northern climates, and has been used in the past as a source of fiber and general nutrition. It’s the rarest form of cannabis, but it can often be found as a hybrid mixed with <em>indica</em> or <em>sativa</em> strains. </p>
<p><strong><em>Cannabis indica</em></strong> grows very well in arid, mountainous areas. It’s a short, bushy plant that looks a bit like a deciduous version of a small fir tree. It is also high in THC and cannabinoids.</p>
<p>Today’s marijuana growers have been experimenting with hybrids of the three cannabis strains to find the highest potency and the most nutritional benefits. When sourcing marijuana (where legal), ask which cannabis hybrids the farmers use to supply the products.</p>

<p>Isolate CBD is cannabidiol in its purest form. There’s nothing in this strain except CBD, hence the name isolate. CBD companies can really only claim that isolate CBD is over 99 percent pure CBD because there may be trace amounts of other components in the CBD. That said, it’s unlikely that you’ll notice the tiny amounts.</p>
<p>There are advantages and disadvantages to using CBD isolate. First, you’ll notice that the price for CBD isolate is typically significantly lower than the prices for full-spectrum and broad-spectrum strains. It’s priced lower for a reason: It’s in much lower demand and does not offer as many promising results as other strains.</p>
<p>CBD isolate is also great for those who are sensitive to other cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. For some, pure cannabidiol is all they need, and they don’t need a more expensive and complex CBD strain. </p>
<p>Many people also prefer isolate because it contains no traceable amounts of THC. Because of the psychoactive nature of THC, some are nervous about purchasing a CBD strain that contains 0.3 percent THC or less, even though this THC content won’t cause any psychoactive effects.</p>
<p>The biggest con is that isolate won’t be as effective on most conditions as full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD, which contain more than just CBD for the optimum effect. So far, those who take CBD isolate have not reported the coveted entourage effect they get from other strains of CBD.</p>
<h2><strong>Full-Spectrum CBD </strong></h2>
<p>On the other side of the scale, we have full-spectrum CBD, which contains flavonoids, terpenes, other cannabinoids and more alongside CBD. Most notably, full-spectrum CBD contains up to the legal limit, 0.3 percent, of THC. </p>
<p>Full-spectrum CBD is sometimes called whole-plant CBD because, other than a high THC content, full-spectrum CBD contains most of the compounds you find in the hemp plant.</p>
<p>With all these good ingredients intact, full-spectrum CBD is a highly effective and popular option among CBD users. Those taking this strain of CBD can enjoy the entourage effect, which provides a wholesome feeling of wellness. </p>
<p>However, the THC content makes many users uncomfortable. Additionally, there have been reports of full-spectrum CBD showing up on a drug test, perhaps because the test being used was ultra-sensitive to THC.</p>

For example, chemists might add specific flavonoids and terpenes back in while leaving others out to change the flavor and aromatherapeutic value of the broad-spectrum strain.</p>
<p>Second, it can be created as a full-spectrum CBD strain, after which chemists will extract the THC from the CBD, so it has all the best parts of the hemp plant without the one piece you don’t want.</p>
